I love to keep my house organized! There’s nothing that makes cleaning or finding stuff easier than keeping a tidy home. But it’s also really nice when you tuck away the clutter to actually know at glance what’s inside each container, basket, and bin. That’s why you should add one of the best label makers for home organization to your home organization shopping list.

The Best Label Makers for Home Organization

I use my label maker all the time. Honestly, there aren’t many problems around the home that can’t be solved with having one! Need to label school supplies? Label maker. Not sure what’s in those spice jars? Label maker. Husband needing constant reminders? Label maker!

You get the idea.

If you already have an older label maker it might be time for an upgrade. The best label makers for home organization have changed over the years, and chances are there’s something a lot cooler than what you already have on the market. Treat yourself! It’s for the house, after all.

How do label makers work?

You buy the label maker and the rolls of paper that go with it. Usually the paper has a sticker back so you can affix labels to anything you want, but some label maker brands have different options for paper. That includes colour!

The label maker itself acts as a small printer. It will print off anything you write on the screen onto your label paper. Then you just rip off your portion (it’s on a roll), peel, and stick! So easy,

Some label makers work from the computer instead of a handheld keyboard and screen. These will often give you more options and fonts, but also can be harder to use. They hook up to your computer like a printer.

What can you organize with a label maker?

Literally everything! You can use the label maker in every room of your home. In the kitchen, use it to label your spice jars, your leftovers, and everything in your pantry. In the bathroom,

label storage containers or use it to label toothbrushes so no one gets mixed up.

If you have kids at home, a label maker can also be used for labelling belongings. Frequently mixed up or misplaced items like water bottles, shoes, lunch containers, etc can all be labelled with the kids’ names.

In your home office, use the label maker to identify what’s on USB sticks or what device cords belong to.

Anywhere you have something to store a label maker can come in handy. It can even be used in a classroom or daycare to organize everything.

What to look for in a label maker

There are a few different varieties out there, so it’s important to identify your personal preferences and organizational style before making a selection.

Do you want something that’s self contained and can create your labels on the fly? This would be best for someone who likes to label as they go with their home organization, rather than someone who does all the labels at once. If that sounds like you, look for a handheld, self contained, portable label maker.

Or are you looking for a small label maker that lets you create something on your computer or phone? A bluetooth or computer based label maker would probably be best for you. They have more options than their handheld counterparts, and the bluetooth ones are portable too.

Do label makers run out of ink?

Not usually. Most label makers are thermal print, which means they use heat activated paper to create the labels. Unlike a printer with ink, thermal printing doesn’t need any ink. That’s why label makers don’t offer a bunch of colour options with the writing.

The great thing about modern technology is we don’t need computer programs or big bulky label makers to see what we’re doing. Thanks to its bluetooth capabilities, this compact labeller relies on an app to print your custom labels.

Even better, it comes with a rechargeable battery that lasts for a week, so no more burning through AAs while you go on a labelling spree. Plus you’ll get a variety of label size options and styles to choose from, which means better quality labelling. One downside, though, is it’s not quite as easy and portable as handheld label makers.

Pros:

  • Bluetooth compatible, no computer required
  • Plenty of different label sizes and customizations
  • Cute and stylish options when it comes to thermal paper

Cons:

  • Portable, but will take longer to use than a handheld label maker with a keyboard
  • Might be tough to set up at first if you’re not good with technology
  • Requires and app to use

Best for: Someone who wants a lot of options, but also wants portability

So what are the best label makers for home organization?

Normally I would only recommend one product, but in this case all of these label makers are actually incredible. It all depends on what kind of project you’re doing, how often you use your label maker, and how good you are with technology.

I would like to recommend the Phomemo Label Printer, since you can choose the paper size, but a lot of people aren’t comfortable with that level of technology. If your label maker isn’t easy to use, you’re not going to use it.

For that reason I think one of the best label makers for home organization is the Brother P-touch.

The best label maker

Brother is an established brand when it comes to printing, and I really like how it has a full sized keyboard. I also love that you can get different paper styles and there’s really unique font options.

It does waste some paper sometimes, but you can adjust the margins to fix this or use scissors. Even with that, though, I would still recommend it for home organization because it has a lot of customization options. Your labels can be far from boring!

If that’s not your style, though, all of these options are the best label makers for home organization and can definitely help you get your home in order.
